Danis Nurgaliev, was born on September 1, 1956 in Abdullino village, Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1978, he graduated from Kazan State University with honors majoring in Geophysical prospecting of mineral deposits. 

In 1983, he defended a PhD thesis “Procedure for studying the directions of natural residual magnetization of sedimentary rocks” at the Institute of Geophysics in Kiev.

In 1997, he defended a doctoral thesis “Variations of geomagnetic field in Late Paleozoic and Early Mesozoic ages” at the Institute of Physics, RAS, in Moscow. 

In 1997, he became Head of Geophysical Prospecting Department at Kazan University.  

In 2002-2003, he gave a course of lectures for students and PhD candidates at the Institute of Geophysics of Swiss Federal University of Technology (Zurich), carried out research in rock paleomagnetism and magnetism. At different periods of time he worked in Potsdam (German Center of Geological Exploration), Bergen (Norway), Naples (Italy), Madrid (Spain), Ghent (Belgium), and Houston (USA).

In 2007, he was appointed to the Vice Rector for Research of Kazan State University (now, Kazan Federal University). In 2011, he also became Head of the Institute of Geology and Oil and Gas Technologies of KFU.

Areas of his expertise include variations of geomagnetic field over the last thousand years based on exploration of sediments at the bottom of modern lakes; development of hardware and software for reservoir identification and management; geophysical tools and methods for efficient development of heavy oil and bitumen fields; technology development for in-situ upgrading of viscous and heavy oils using catalyst agents; geophysical monitoring of in-situ processes to provide efficient control of thermal-steam and thermal-gas treatment processes.

Danis Nurgaliev is an author and co-author of nearly 400 research papers, including 105 publications in Scopus and Web of Science, 8 monographs, 32 patents, 7 study guides; his Hirsch number is 21. He was a dissertation advisor for 7 PhD and 2 Dr.Sc candidates. He is an editorial board member in such journals as Neftyanoye Khozyaistvo, Georesursy, Petroleum. He is a Chairman of Thesis Committee at Kazan Federal University; a titular Professor at South-West University of Petroleum (Chengtu, China); member of Geomagnetism Council of RAS; member of Coordinating Research Council of RF Ministry of Science and Higher Education. He has a number of titles, including Honorary Prospector (2000), Honorary Scientist of the Republic of Tatarstan (2005), RT State Prize winner (2009), Honorary Worker of RF Higher Vocational Education (2016), RF Government Prize winner in Science and Technology (2018).
